$100 million

Countries around the world are pledging assistance to the U.S. to help deal with Katrina's devastation. China's offering $5 million. Castro wants to send 1,100 doctors and 26 tons of medicine. Mexico's offering money and 15 truckloads of supplies to arrive via Texas. Spain's waiting for a formal request, at which point they will gladly release gasoline stocks to us. Even Hugo Chavez is offering cheap fuel and relief workers. Yes, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, whose assassination was "suggested" not two weeks earlier on American national television. That's one of the funny ones. Another humorous one is Saudi Arabia. Of the several countries contributing fuel, the Saudis are not among them. Instead, they will contribute $5 million to the American Red Cross, similar to Australia's $7.6 million, Japan's $200,000, and Sri Lanka's $25,000. That way, stupid capitalist American government can't bungle the money. At least I kind of agree with that idea. The Red Cross will be responsible with it. The funniest one to me, stupid though it may be, is Qatar. Qatar, a country with a total area of less than 5,000 sq. miles, is smaller than Connecticut. They are offering $100 million in distaster monetary aid.

$100 million! Knowing what I knew of Qatar's size, I was astonished. Further research yielded these results: Qatar is 1/740th the size of China, but is donating twenty times China's offering. The second highest offer is Australia, with $7.6 million; Qatar's 1/594th the size, offering around 13 times the assistance. Qatar was the 109th highest GDP in 2004 (the World was listed as the #1 GDP - uhhh), but is 31st in per capita GDP (whereas the world is 71st). Qatar is LOADED.

Here's something else to think about, on a tangent: the world is 71st in per capita GDP. That means that places 72 through 135 live worse than the world average. Oh, and by the way, the world average is $8,200 a year. Try to imagine living on that. 64 of 135 listed countries live on less than $8,200 a year for their average citizen. Imagine being a person considered poor by those societies.

Anyway. Off my tangent. India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Indonesia are also all offering assistance to the U.S. These four were the countries absolutely hardest hit by the tsunami, and they're offering assistance. It's incredible. This is nothing compared to what they went through. We should still be giving them money and people and supplies.

Chief Justice Rehnquist died late Saturday, which wasn't unexpected, but was still a shock. No matter his positions, he was a fixture on the Court for as long as I can remember, and he has my respect simply as a person. The Court had no major swings that I can remember during his tenure, and he captained his ship with constancy and integrity. Of course, the other downswing is that Bush has the freedom to fill two Supreme Court seats. Rehnquist was a conservative, so it's not like they'll be replacing a liberal with a conservative. I dunno. We'll just have to see how it plays out.

Summary: Tony Blair's slobbering for a chance to help us, Spain is willing to give us gas, Hugo Chavez wants to help us despite a call for his assassination, and of all countries, Saudi Arabia isn't offering fuel. A ton of money is going to the Red Cross, which is fantastic, and Chief Justice Rehnquist died, which isn't. This has been a whirlwind week or two, and it's gonna play out for a while.

Oh. P.S.: OU sucks. TCU rocks.

Aggies

"A man with a gun is a citizen.
A man without a gun is a subject."

- the rear bumper of some stupid fucking Aggie

You know what, I'm just going to let that speak for itself. Don't make the mistake of thinking I'm disgusted with Aggies because of that. I'm disgusted with that Aggie because of that, and I'm disgusted with anybody that agrees with that bumper sticker.

Americanism

At least 150 people have died in a three-train collision in Pakistan this morning.

That's the second story. The banner headline on CNN.com, of course, is the news that despite new tile damage, the Discovery is going to launch.

Ugh.
